Advantages
There are many advantages of a thematic approach to SEL as a more holistic view versus the isolated skill building in each competency. Listed are the advantages of theme based SEL:
1. Holistic Approach – In every session, students see and experience the emotional as well as social aspects of their actions. In addition to learning the theme, the 5 competencies are introduced and practised at the same time.
2. Life Skills – Besides learning valuable life skills as hard skills, students also experience the soft aspects or social emotional aspect of these skills.
3. Easy to Acquire – The SEL competencies are easily acquired as it is contextualised into day-to-day experiences such as bullying, appreciating self, motivation and others versus simply learning to label feeling.
4. Easy to transfer – With the competencies being introduced in a day-to-day context, transference to real life occurs naturally. Students see the challenges as well as impact of practising these skills.
Formats
1. Appreciation & Awareness – This format is a one-session program typically lasting between 1-3 hours. Within this available time frame, the focus is on creating awareness and appreciating the importance as well as impact of each SEL theme. The SEL framework is introduced through interactive presentation and activities.

2. Competency-Based – This format utilises the multiple session or camp approach to instil competencies in SEL. Any competency-based learning requires learner practice to iterate from Unconscious Incompetence to Unconscious Competence. The focus of these sessions provides ample opportunities to practise and harness the skills of SEL.
